We have some SS 316 pipelines from 2 to 12" nominal size. The pressure is 0-5 psig and temperature is -45 degree F.

While assessing the NDT reports for these pipelines it came to light that all these lines are sch.5 and sch.10. ( 1 to 3 mm thick).

Even though the thickness is ok for pressure temp rating is is good for mechanical strength point of view. IS there some minimum thickness guidelines for pipe line design

Thanks

Minimum diameter to thickness ratios are usually around 100 - 120 or so. There is often a minimum D/t ratio required by the specific code you are working to, look there.

From tabulated data, nominal 12-in pipe wall thicknesses for Sch 5 would be 3.96 mm, and for Sch 10, 4.57 mm.

Just as an aside to the current discussion, you may find the following chart useful. It shows all the wall thicknesses for pipe by size and schedule.

Hope it helps.

Much thinner wall spiral wound stainless steel is often used. What you need to use is basic beam theory to establish the stresses and deflection. Up to 6" could be dairy tube rather than Sch 5 or 10S.
