At the moment I am running windows XP and Solid Edge ST 1. We don't have a maintenance package on ST so as of now we are not getting ST 2 or 3, but this may be in my future (and yes, I have heard of how great the enhancements are, its mostly a money thing). I am going to be running Esprit CAM software soon and it is advised to run best on Windows 7. Google gives me differing opinions on this but what I need to know is ST compatible with Windows 7? Would I be best to run Windows 7?

Thanks

Jordan

ST is not compatible with Win 7 (that came in version ST2 with MP1). Many have attempted to install it on Win 7 and have succeeded to a degree. Main things you will need to do to get it to work.

Turn of User Account control before install (or removal).
Right click on Setup.exe and choose "Run as Administrator".
Watch the process tab in Task Manager and end process on PrinterInstaller.exe when it comes up (both the main install and maintenance patches).

You can turn UAC back on when done, but be advised there may be situations where you need to write to a file stored in the Solid Edge Program folder and you won't be able to (Windows 7 "No, no"). You will have to make those files (or the folder) "writable".

Well if it runs with limited success, I am not going to even try. It's not worth the screwing around. But maybe I can persuade my company on both 7 and ST3 when it comes out (I wouldn't mind having a thread function), but until then XP will work for me.
Now when you say MP1, is this an extra buy or just an integrated part of ST2/3?

MP1 is just the new shiny name for Service Pack 1.

Ok, so I needed to switch to windows 7, just did it today.
Pellaken I took your advice and it loaded great, but one big glitch is getting me, not sure if there is a way around it.
Drawing files load up great, so do the part files, but when the part file loads, the part screen (not any toolbars or anything)freezes to whatever image was there last. I can grab a line tool and actually use it and do everything needed, but I cannot see anything I do. I'll attach some screen shots too. Has anyone encountered this?

Just wondering if you need a graphics driver update?
Have a look if there is one for Windows 7 on your card manufacturers web site.

Seems to be working spot on, I will let everybody know if I encounter anymore glitches.

Do you now have ST1 running OK on W7?

Seems to be running just fine now, that was the only problem I encountered before, I have done a few things in draft as well, all seemingly fine. I will keep you posted if I find any more glitches but so far so good.
All I did was take Pellaken's advice.

Turn of User Account control before install (or removal).
Right click on Setup.exe and choose "Run as Administrator".
Watch the process tab in Task Manager and end process on PrinterInstaller.exe when it comes up (both the main install and maintenance patches).

So a few minor inconviniences to report. Both on drafts.
One is the diametrical centre mark only leaves a very small centre mark, wont go full size.
The other is that new sheets keep slowly getting added with different templates, but a quick delete and were off running again.

Just to let people know I have been running ST1 now for a few weeks with Windows 7 and other than the 2 small inconviniences I stated above, everything still is running great with no other flaws yet.
Thanks
