Hi everybody there!

I would like to know how to evaluate the vibrational behaviour of railway wheels. The point is that we have looked what the market offers, and we want to foresee how the wheels are going to work considering their vibro-acustic features (principally at low frequencies).

What would you do?

Thank you very much mates.

when you say you want to monitor the behaviour of the wheel , i think you should take into consideration the vabrational behaviour of the traction motors and gearboxes
Then i would monitor the Low Speed Gear, Front and Rear axle
high Speed Gear, Front and Rear axle, traction Motor, Front and Rear axle,Traction Motor Commutator End.
by controling the vibrational behaviour of the above components it might be easier to monitor the vabrational behaviour of the the wheels.

I don't want to monitor anything right now. What I try is to analyse the wheel before purchasing it. I was thinking in making some computer simulation or things like that. Just the behaviour of the wheel itself is what worries me now, not how it interacts with the rest of the system.

Well you've got three problems

1) building a FE mode of the wheel and its boundary conditions.

2) forcing that model with the correct forcing functions to generate realistic vibrations

3) using those vibrations to drive an acoustic model of the air around it.

1 and 3 are fairly straightforward, using appropriate software (say Nastran, and then a BEM package for the acoustics - say Sysnoise). 2 is tricky.

If you can get results within 10 dB of the real answers then you will be doing well.
