Is there any way to calculate the wave speed for a urethane-lined steel pipe? I am doing a transient analysis for a slurry flow, but can't seem to find a formula to find the correct wave speed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Never seen that done before. It seems that you could calculate an effective bulk modulus considering urethane surrounding your fluid, then solve for speed of sound.

Alternatively, ignore the urethane and use the higher wave speed. That would usually get conservative results.

Or, measure the wave speed in a test segment.

How thick is the Urethane liner? thickness of the pipe? Is the liner applied inside or outside the pipe?

I would ignore the urethane lining and base wave speed on steel alone. Or you could use the method of convetting the thickness of urethane to an equivalent steel thickness based upon the ratio of moduli. The urethane is going to be pretty thin so wont affect the results.

I would also ignore the urethane lining considering that the wall thickness of the steel pipeline is untouched.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to ignore the lining.
