Verifying in Field...Who's Job is it? 2

I am a Project Manager for a Steel Fabricator. Often, there is much incomplete information on design drawings which necessitate field verification, prior to development of shop drawings.
Is the General Contractor responsible to furnish this needed information to the E.O.R. to add to the design drawings or is it the responsibility of the steel fabricator to go to the site, and field measure everything to add to the first set of shop drawings? What saith the AISD? 9th please?

I doubt there is something said in the AISC code or manual about this. The scope of work and services is usually defined in the Contract between you (steel fabricator) and the general contractor. Your project cost and schedule is dependent on the prime contract. You better clarify the scope or your project goes into budget overrun or schedule delays.

For our firms (as structural engineers)it usually goes like this:

Fabricator submits shop drawings with all +/- 'field verify' dimensions clouded.

GC sends shop drawings to Arch.

EOR writes 'contractor to field verify' and declines to provide the definative dimensions.

On the second round of shop drawings, the GC usually has provided these dimensions to the fabricator.

Recently, the contractors we have been working with have been doing really well and providing the firm dimensions on the first round of drawings.

Most architectural specifications state the contractor is responsible for verify existing conditions. Whether the contractor passes on that responsiblity to the fabricator is dependent upon your agreement with the GC.
