This may have been addressed in a previous post, but my searches have come up fruitless.

I have a huge library or AutoCAD based 2D drawings and I would like to use them to generate 3D Solid Edge parts. I have been unable to figure out how to take an AutoCAD drawing and use it in the profile environment to create a 3D model.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unless you are 100% sure that the Acad drawings are accurate, I would not even attempt to use them. In both Solid Edge & SolidWorks I have found it quicker & safer to redraw the sketch entities.
Having to select the appropriate sketch elements from DWG is more hassle than redrawing from scratch.

CorBlimeylimey is absolutely right I don't recommend using the DWG sketch, but sometimes just to model standard part it may be usefull to use the DWG.

To use a 2d drawing from Autocad you have to open it with solid edge draft, then you go in "draw in view" then you use the command "create 3d" this will enable you to bring you sketch into a part or a sheetmetal part and then create your feature based on the imported sketch.

Try this and if you experience some problem come back to me I'll try to help you better.

Good luck

Copy the profile (oen it in Drawing) and paste it in a sketch in Part. Use the AutoConstraint-macro to remove all double lines and connect connected lines, measure the most important dimensions (and correct is wrong) and use the sketch the way you normally would. This has worked for me with vendor components perfectly.

Thanks for the replies everyone. A friend of mine told me about the "Draw in View Mode" that the tutorials neglected to mention.

Pekelder, that was exactly what I was wanting to do. I have a huge library of components from suppliers and a ones that I and otehrs have created and I hated to have to repopulate that catalog with SE files to do the same job. I did notice that SE does struggle to maintain the original vector points and closing the corners. I have not tried the Auto-Constraint Macro yet. Been manually eliminating concurrent vectors and general poor drafting that passes these days from supplier drawings.

Once again guys, THANKS.

I had the exact same problems as Wiemannironworks and Pekelder's solution works just fine, but where can I find the AutoConstraint-macro you mention?

Sorry - I didn't search hard enough - I found it on the SE CD.

Thanks
