There are student versions avilable for Catia V5, Solidworks, a mutitude of Autodesk products including Inventor, and Pro/e I belive. For someone looking to expand ther skill set of cad applications, these are highly usefull in developing a proficency on a new software.

How come Seimens doesn't offer student versions of NX and/or Solid Edge? Gaining any experince on this software outside of getting a job where these applications are used (catch 22 applies) or taking a course at a university or college (provided you are eligible to audit the course) would be next to impossible.

I'm in the Columbus OH area.

Ideas? Suggestions?

"I had exactly the same problem with SolidWorks when I was unemployed recently. I contacted a supplier to get a 30-day copy to brush up my skills but was told no chance."

Obtaining a student version is as easy as registering and signing up for a class - probably something cad related. That is what I have done to obtain the student versions. Just supply them with a photocopy of you student I.D. and download the software from the website or purchase it from a number of different on-line academic supply stores and you've got a copy of it for 12 months. AutoCAD and Inventor offer 61 month terms. Others offer a personal use version.

The company who you obtain the software from doesn't seem to check whether or not the institution that you received your student I.D. from even uses the software you are obtaining from them.

This doesn't seem to be the case with Seimens. Yet....

As long as you have an email of the type *.edu you can download the Inventor previous version for free. I used an alumni email from my University to get the student version.

If you are unemployeed SolidWorks and even Inventor I believe have created Stimulus Packages where you can qualify for free training and software to help build your skills.

The VAR was wrong!
The software license lasts for 90 days, but can usually be renewed. The software is the Premium version, but drawings are watermarked to prevent use in commercial applications, and models cannot be opened with commercially licensed versions.

CBL,
The VAR may be have been wrong, but they were just not interested as it was probably not going to result in a sale.
How long has this package been available? - I was enquiring about 6 months ago.

bc.
2.4GHz Core2 Quad, 4GB RAM,
Quadro FX4600.

I believe it was April 2009, but even before that they were offering a Personal Edition under a '3D Skills' promotion.

if you are not unemployed you can go to VAR's seminar and get a 30day full blown premium edition with no watermarking that is compatible with full versions. As long as you are interested in buying or can possibly get the company you work for to buy the full edition you can get additional 30day periods if you are friendly with the sales rep.

Um... seems like this discusion has veered off course a bit. We are discussing SolidEDGE here.

But I just stumbled across this...

I wonder why this never turned up in my previous searches?

Now if Seimens would offer a student version of NX....

V16 is really old. I guess it's always possible they found "legitimate" licences somewhere. From companies closing for example. At my former employer, a new salesman came in with copies of V10, as he was previously the owner of a mfg. company and had bought the software. Although, I don't think the EULA allows for resale of licences.

that's correct. A license can only be transferred ($$) and
Siemens/UGS must agree

But it can be transfered? That I didn't know. I must confess I didn't read the EULA in its entirety (who does anyway?).

Most cad companies refuse to allow transfers of licenses unless the entire company has been sold.

Be advised that one SHOULD be VERY skeptical of that 'lunderkin' site as anything you purchase there may prove to 'cost' much more than advertised ;-)

As for the Archway Systems site, that one is legitimate.
