Structural design of open artificial lake.

Dear sirs,
I am starting up the design of a new project (an open artificial water lake) (the cad file is attached). Since it is the first time to design such a project. I have many inquiries in my mind.
1. Shall I design it as a pool or there is another perception?
2. Should I use reinforcement concrete or shotcrete? if shotcrete please direct me to any reference on how to design the cross-section.
3. Whereas the length of the lake is (145 m) and the maximum width (40 m). shall I consider expansion joints? are there any references for these joints’ details and locations?
4. Are there any details that should be considered under the concrete surface of the lake such as back filling specification and seepage network?

Any help will be appreciated.

This thread reminded me a similar project we have designed around 40 years ago. Our design was a storage basin , there is no vertical walls but with paved slopes ( 1V:2H ) . Typical slope surface = Fabric fixed in the earth (reinforced earth )+ geotextile + 200 mm crushed stone filter + HDPE welded membrane +200 mm RC CIP modular slabs with WWF.
The bottom section was = geotextile + 200 mm crushed stone filter + HDPE welded membrane + 200 mm RC CIP modular slabs with WWF.
Up to now , i did not hear any complain or any problem.

My suggestions would be;

- Search the web for the use of welded GEO-MEMBRANE,
- Write this post to EARTH RETENTION ENGINEERING with more geotech. data ( GWL etc..) to get better responds..

1) My first thought is that it is conceptually the same as a pool and that should at least be the starting point.
2) Pools are usually done with shotcrete and I think that's probably makes the most sense.
3) This is the big questions for me. For reinforced concrete (or even shotcrete) that's this large, you almost always need expansion joints. But, I wouldn't want the lake to leak through the expansion joint. My guess is if you look at ACI 350 (on environmental / waste water concrete structures) I'm guessing that you will get more information about how to deal with "water tight" concrete structures and still handle temp / shrinkage. Regardless, my guess is that there will be maintenance issues that require occasional patching no matter what.
4) My guess is that you'll want a membrane between the soil and a gravel base, then you'll build in a good sloped drainage system of some kind. Maybe that feeds any leaked water back to some kind of a sump system. Similar a "secondary" containment system that we see in some industrial plants. Though that is geared towards preventing chemical pollutants from entering, what you're dealing with is much less worrisome.
