Hello, I have separate water and fire services to a building, each with a double check valve assembly bfp. The inspector is requesting strainers to be installed before the BFPs. We do not have space for additional appurtenances at this time, the equipment is installed. Is there some code requirement for strainers? IPC or National Standard Plumbing Code apply. I was under the impression that strainers could restrict the flow on the service(if not properly maintained).

There is no requirement in the IPC.

How are you getting away with a double check on the domestic service? Typically reduced pressure (RPZ) type are required.

We typically put the strainer upstream to prevent any particulates that might be in the water from fouling the checks and preventing full closure. With a DCDA it is likely not an issue because they do not drain to an air gap. With the RPZ, it is important since they do drain and if the checks are not closed tight, you will get some flow out the air gap.
