Hi,

I am looking for a polymer to be used for an injection molded bushing (od 13mm)with an internal thread (M8 x 12mm). The bushing shall withstand an axial load of 800N and shall be sterilizable (irradiation). Thanks!

There are quite a few engineering plastics around which are irradiation resistant and could suit your applications, such as PA, PSU, PES, PEEK (reinforced or not). The following materials are not generally suitable for irradiation : PP, PTFE, Acetal and PVC. Also, impact modified materials containing rubbery phases such as ABS should be treated with care, since the rubbery phase may crosslink and embrittle the material.

Contact any resin manufacturer and be specific to what you need the resin to do and they will flood you with choices. When detailing the sterilization, be specific to what type it is (i.e. cobalt-60 gamma irridation) and how often the part or product is exposed. One last tidbit, if the mold is already built, this needs to be conveyed to the resin supplier because you will need to match some of the properties of the resin that the mold was originally built for. Good luck.

With all due respect, I would like to bring to your attention and clairify that Polypropylene, Acetal and PVC can be radiated.
PP - is generally used for Medical Syringes
Acetal -is used for stiffer types of Medical devices
PVC -is a commonly but less used Medical material, in fact most of the medical grades of PVC have a Blue tint, which disappears after irradiation.
Rubber - Materials such as "Santoprene" are capable of being irradiated.
Acetal would be a good choice for a starting point to investigate materials for a bearing surface. The Acetal needs to be selected as a radiation grade. Otherwise the component will degrade and have the appearance of turning to powder. Hope this helps.
