I am looking to find the amount of compression that a spacer made out of 1074 strip steel can withstand. Basically it is used in a plastic housing to protect the plastic from crushing when a bolt is tightend down. In this particular case the spacer would be about .295 diameter with a wall thickness of .020 thick.

I would like to know the formula for figuring out the amount of load. I have been doing some investigating on-line and have not found anything that I see that I can use in this instance. I know it will have to do with the material tensile strenght and its yield strength.

Help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Assuming the following:

E = 2900000psi
Ftu = 94000psi
Ft2 = 73000psi
I = 1.08e-3mm^4
A = 0.173in^2

Assuming failure at Ftu, load = 16262lb
Assuming failure at Ft2, load = 12629lb
Assumin longwave instability;
0.8in long, load = 8356lb
0.9in long, load = 6602lb
1.0in long, load = 5348lb
1.1in long, load = 4420lb
1.2in long, load = 3713lb
1.3in long, load = 3164lb
1.4in long, load = 2728lb
1.5in long, load = 2377lb
1.6in long, load = 2089lb
1.7in long, load = 1850lb
1.8in long, load = 1651lb
1.9in long, load = 1481lb
2.0in long, load = 1337lb

Kinda simplified, but good ballpark.
