Is there any published data on bonding Xylex with cyclohexonone solvents?

Have you asked the polymer manufacturer

That was on my agenda for today... I had some time to noodle on this after hours.

From Google...

"Xylex resins are a transparent blend of polycarbonate (PC) and an amorphous polyester. Compared to PC, the polyester in Xylex resin provides enhanced chemical resistance against certain fluids, enhancing the resin's stress crack resistance. It also permits lower processing temperatures than straight PC."

According to this
You can solvent weld using 50:50 MEK and cyclohexanone

Polyethylene is not solvent bondable at room temperature to itself or anything else. My suggestion would be to flame or corona treat the PE to raise its surface energy and then use an ahesive to accomplish the bonding. You might contact people like H.Fuller or other expoy suppliers like 3M for suitable adhesive. The adhesive manufacturer will have to know how many bonds per year you intend to make and your method of fixturing as they are not instant bonds.

Where did polyethylene come into this? I read that Xylex is a blend of polycarbonate and polyester.

I read it was an allow of PC and PE. Xenoy is an alloy of PC and Polyester.

Polycarbonate / polyester alloy.

I see now, I think Dwight read PE as polyethylene rather than polyester. Easily done.

All texts and conventions I know of, abbreviate polyethylene to PE and polymers popularly called polyesters to PET and PBT respectivly.

I agree Pat.

The PE abbreviation was just a quick way for me to describe which Xylex material I was talking about. I believe that there are other alloys with the brand name.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the information. I think that I am all set for now as I have spoken with the material supplier. We will need to do our own testing in order to find a level of bonding that is acceptable.
