Sidewalks In or Out

In preparing a subdivision proposal, I exclude sidewalks and leave it up to the P & Z or Eng. Dept. to tell me to put them in, that is because I cannot get a handle on the logic for using them or not? I've submitted Cul-De-Sacs and they have added them, I have thru road subdivision between collector roads and the projected volumes are high and no sidewalks are required. It's not good for my clients to always put them in and have to build them, but on the other hand it's RIGHT to put them in when they provide a level of safety which improves the subdivision and increases that development's chance of being successful.

Any thoughts or guides that will straighten out this matter for me???

Several things come into consideration.
1 Are there existing sidewalks nearby? Would this be a gap?
2 On a cul, will school buses enter the cul or will kids have to walk to the main street?
3. Where is school, playground, ball fields? In walking distance?
4. Are there many/any peds on heavy thru street?
5. Where is commuter bus pick up?
6. Can you connect developments thru sidewalks not adjacent to streets.(back to back culs)
7. Is parking along street shoulder? Do parkers have a place to safely walk?

I guess firstly it is going to depend on whether you are designing an urban or rural cross section. Urban roads typically have some type of sidewalk or walking path to facilitate pedestrian traffic, particularly residential/commercial areas. Industrial areas may not be required to have sidewalks, but in all cases, we always had to satify the approving authority, usually a municipality. I would check with them first. KRS Services
