Hey all,

Is it required to calculate the rupture of the net section in a Z-Purlin if the load is perpendicular to the flanges (bolt holes in web)? I don't believe it is as the web and flange would have to fail for the section to rupture. If I remember correctly from school shear lag needs to be calculated for forces parallel to the flanges. However, if it is required where can you find the information on how to do so for a Z-shape? I couldn't find any place in the AISI Standard that specifically called out an equation for shear lag for a Z-shape. Thanks!

I agree...I believe you need only investigate shear lag in connections subject to tension.
Your case seems to be closer to block shear.

If I remember correctly the shear centre for a Z section lies on the centroid. Channels have the shear centre outside the section
