Seismic Separation Question

Good afternoon,

I have to determine the minimum seismic separation between two buildings. One building is a two story for which i am providing hardy frames HFX as the lateral system. The other building is and adjacent existing building.

I have never done a seismic separation calculation and was hoping to get direction. Any help would be appreciated.

From the research I have done i understand I have to use ASCE 7-10 12.12.3 (see attachment). My questions are:

1- how do i determine the maximum elastic displacement of the building with the hardy frame.
2- can i assume the Dm (maximum inelastic response displacement) for the existing building is the allowable story drift per Table 12.12-1?

Thank you for any guidance/help. Any examples would be appreciated.

Hi xeneize10!
Your question seems too generic to me. You have to perform a structural analysis to determine the maximum displacements of the structure. Depending on the complexity of your structure, you might not be able to complete your task with hand calculations.

Check with the manufacturer and the product code report for drift values. In general it is acceptable to assume the maximum allowable drift for the existing building, but you should also consider diaphragm deflection if you believe it may be significant.
