I have just started using SE. How can I scale a drawing to fit into a smaller sheet size without scaling the dimension values of the drawing itself?

Are you working in 3D then creating views or in 2D?

What you are asking should happen automatically with views generated from 3D data.

If you are working 3D then you want to put your geometry on 2D model view (about 1/2 down tool bar). You then create your drawing views where you dimension from that.

KENAT,

Have you reminded yourself of faq731-376 recently, or taken a look at posting policies:

No, I only have the free 2D system. I recently downloaded it from their website.

In that case use the 2D model view which I believe is still in the free version.

Yes Kenat the Model view is still available in the free version.

Graemewic, the best way to to work, would be to draw every shape in the 2D model view (if you don't see a tab at the bottom left then go to the View menu and check the 2d model view option) then when you want to put it on a sheet you will have to create a 2D model view (It's kind of a window showing all or some area of the model view you created) this view will enable you to scale the drawing to fit the sheet and insert every dimensions required.

I hope it helps

Patrick

In the early years of CAD working in 2d only, you would draw your main views at full size then scale up your text and drawing border to suit. For enlarged details I think we would apply a scale factor to the dimension. You can do this in SE using Dimension Properties > General > Scale factor > Manual for individual dims or create dimension styles for whatever csales you need.
The problem with the 2d model sheet is that you can't see any of the dimensions and notes that you've applied.
I used the 2d model sheet for a wiring diagram but when we came to modify it we had exactly that problem - couldn't see any of the wire labels so we had difficulty relating the diagram to the marked-up drawing.

I got it worked out. Thank you everyone for your help.

You could use Retrieve Dimensions to dimension the Drawing View. Assuming that you have dimensions in 2D view model, you would need to change the dimensions layer to Auto-Hide (this is a default layer) and use Retrieve Dimensions on the Drawing View. You could also retrive Callouts too.

Note:
I always thought Retrieve Dimensions could only be used on Drawing View for parts only but it proves to be otherwise. Not sure if this available in the free version.

Hope this helps.
