Saving assembly as single part

Is it possible to save an assembly, consisting of different parts, as a single part consisting of one solid body with the same outline as the assembly? In Solid Edge this is possible. In this way you can create a welded part from different parts. In higher assemblies you can just load the welded part.

I would like to use this to be able to create simplified representations of assemblies, to speed up loading etc.

Just bring in the weldment sub-assembly into the higher level file. It will show up in the BOM as a single file, with the proper settings.
There are other ways to show different components at different levels in UG.

Not real sure what you are trying to accomplish, but there are two other methods you may want to explore. Try Wrap assembly, which creates a triangulated solid body around an assembly. If you set the tolerances real tight you may acheive an accptable solid.
The next (and generally thought of as "better") method uses WAVE. Link all the solid bodies of the assembly into the assembly part, and turn all the part reference sets to "Empty". Now you have a bunch of solid bodies in the assembly, and you can do anything with them you want (boolean them together, add assembly cuts or other features, etc). And the best part is that you do not lose associativity with the defining part. At assembly load time, you can choose not to load any components, and still get the full model (beware when doing this that the parts will not update if the master components are not fully loaded).
