Protecting soft aluminium castings from inprocess damage

Hi , I am searching for ideas on how to protect easily damaged aluminium castings ( from 50mm to 150mm diameter). They are roughly handled through manufacturing process steps. Individual compartments seems to be the best way but through the heat treat process there are major difficulties with capacity loss and extra weight. Has anyone any views on how to overcome this problem ?
