Get a copy of "Practical Construction of Warships" by RN Newton.

It includes details of how to set the driveline up.

Alignment of bearing journals and sterntube (or gearbox) are made with Linebore equipment, using a laser transmitter mounted to the axial surface at the end of the sterntube (or the gearbox flange), and a detector unit placed in the bearing journal. Measurement values are recorded in two positions for each journal (the detector unit is rotated 180°), the measurement program then calculates and displays the position in horizontal and vertical direction.

Application note:
Product data:
Alignment between shaft and gearbox are made with Shaft alignment equipment, using two measuring units mounted at each side of the coupling. If the ship is in water the Horizontal program must be used, because it does not depend on the electronic inclinometer, which is used in program EasyTurn™ (The inclinometers are affected by the ship movements in the water.). The result of the measurment shows how to shim and adjust the gearbox to get the drive line straight.
