i have to build a fairly small panel (its a tight squeeze) and will consist of a 4 amp d.c. drive and a 90-30 ge fanuc plc how close can these go together, has anyone had any problems in the past

The drive manufacturer probably gives top, bottom, and side minimum clearances for the drive for purposes of air flow and cooling.
 
yeh! your right but i was thinking about magnetic interference spacing
 
As long as you keep the drive manufacturer clearances you should have no problems.
 
Installing a simple metallic separator plate between the drive and PLC would eliminate your concerns regarding EMF. However if the panel is small have you run a thermal rise calculation to check the enclosure will sufficiently dissipate the heat generated by the the components inside, without overheating.
