Can anyone identify a good source for writing a pipe spec. I am looking into some standards (if any) or software which can help write a pipe spec. designed for a specific facility based on type of service and pressure temp etc. It will identify the type of pipe, bolting, flange, material etc. for a specific application (steam, water, process etc)
Appreciate any replies.

You must start with the ASME B31.1 power piping code for any utility service lines such as steam,, condensate, or water. All the requirements are in there. See the ASME website. You may also need to acquire a copy of your State boiler code if it has one. Your state may have adopted the NBIC, if so, acquire a copy of the NBIC (National Boiler Inspection Code)from the National Board if you are dealing with power steam. Other requirements are in the appropriate sections of the ASME Boiler and pressure vessel code books.

I think most pipe specs these days are derived from a PIP spec (Process Industry Practices). If you're company is a member (and probably should be if your company is doing this kind of engineering) you should have access.

And, of course, you should check with whatever piping code (not necessarily B31.1, since that's pretty exclusive to power plants, not process/refining) for requirements. Edward L. Klein

Hi Mechy (Mechanical)

I agree with StressGuy (Mechanical)(Edward L. Klein, Pipe Stress Engineer,Houston, Texas) regard to PIP spec (Process Industry Practices): I have attended the PIP meeting on PRESSURE VESSELS, HEAT EXCHANGER, TANKS.

Thank you Stressguy for your help.

you may find the spec in material petrolium hand book for free from any well organised oil company

I think there is no such software which will help you to select the materials. The piping material is selected based on the Design codes as referred in the Client requirement(ASME B31.1,B31.3,B31.4,B31.8, etc). The Basic material whether CS or SS or any non Ferrous material selction is done with the Process, Material specialist and Corrosion Engineering Dept. Based on the Basic material only then we go to codes with Design conditions (Pressure & Temperature) to select the material.
We have software like MARIAN, GEMINI etc to develop the Piping Specs. These software doesn't give any technical assistance. It helps in developing piping specs in a definite format and links with PDS software package which helps in extracting MTO.
I hope this will clear your query
