Your question is very general.

Do you know the pressure, temperature and flowrate proposed? Is the process fluid compressed air?

Essentially, the "right way" for piping layout is to get from point A to point B as efficiently as possible, keeping in mind available piping support locations, accessibility of valving for operation and maintenance, pipe flexibility, obstruction considerations and other factors. For a good general overview of piping design, try the following books (all of which are listed at my site):

-Process Plant Layout and Piping Design
-The Piping Guide: For the Design and Drafting of Industrial Piping Systems
-Piping Handbook

I also suggest you contact a local mechanical engineer for advice.

You can take a look at my website for more information, under the pull-down menu section "Compressors" and in the software section, there are links there for free downloadable pipe sizing software. Have you posted your question to newsgroups:sci.engr.mech?
