PDM Revision Control

Now that I know enough about PDMWorks to be dangerous...

I want to be able to check-in files & have the revision stay the same (by default).

Is this possible?

Yes, you can do this.

You have to enable revision overwriting from within VaultAdmin. Check "Allow latest revision overwrite" on the Vault Settings tab.

Done that... but I still have to "manually" change the revision after the files are vaulted. It still bumps the revision when the files are checked in.

If you check it in as "A1+" for instance, it will stay at that revision until you change it.

Nope... every time I check it out & back in - the revision gets bumped (by default). I then have to "manually" change it in the vault.

In the admin vault you will see under the Lifecycle tab on the left lower side Change status you will nee this to be checked as follow to allow working revs or bumping.

check the following.
allow status...
select in the check-in dialog box
admin
document owner
select the user group
allow admin to ....

When we check items in we can bump or make them working. Once we change this, say to a working rev it will stay this way until we bump the rev.
It works every time for us.

The only way I know, during check-in ... manually change the revision to the same revision.

Two choices:
1) make more use of Working + revision as suggested by Silas, or...
2) ignore the PDMWorks check-in revision as nothing more than iteration tracking, and create your own custom property to track revisions as you desire.

If you want an automatic revision assignment but don't want that done by PDMWorks, you can use a simple macro to bump revision (really easy if you use numeric rev's, but not too hard if you use alpha revs).

I didn't like how PDMWorks did this either. So this is how I handled it in VaultAdmin:

1) Revision Scheme Tab: Set the Revision scheme to be only Primary, 0000-9999.

2) Revision Table Tab: Disabled Revision Table

3) Lifecycle Tab: Disabled Lifecycle

4) Properties Tab: Created custom PDMWorks property "Drawing Rev" and mapped it to Solidworks property "Revision". Mapped PDMWorks existing "Revision" to custom Solidworks Property "PDMWorks Rev".

This allows me to change the rev when I want and use the PDMWorks revs (0000-9999) for part history. The downside is that it isn't obvious which PDMWorks rev relates to which Solidworks Rev but we only need that infrequently so a custom search is all is needed.

Yup, that's pretty much how I've got it set up at my company. We've never once used the PDMWorks revision for anything other than a way to count the number of check-in's. lol

The drawing rev is still not automated in any way, which is why I made the suggestion that if he wanted automation, he could make a macro.
