Just a survey for reference;

Can SE have two or more files open of the same name but from different folders?

Word can, but Excel and SW cannot.

It appears it can, I couldn't remember for sure so just checked. I have a feeling things can get interesting if you have an assy open that uses those files but can't recall for sure.

KENAT, it only gets interesting if you are using the File Management.txt file and have the keywords in a unique order to force SE to find files without using their absolute path.

Just to add to Scott post, the absolute path in Solid Edge is always looking first in the same folder has the assembly. But I think it could work for same name files in completely different folders other that the assembly. I never tried it though.

I may have been thinking of replacing parts, that can be a pain when both have the same file name.

It's effectively a pain because when you are working in an assembly, you can't replace a part with a part of the same name. To accomplish that you need to use revision manager.

That's it, I couldnt' remember which way round it was, whether in Rev Manager or Assembly-replace part.

I thought I'd had trouble in rev mgr too but I can't remember now.

In normal opereation, the first place SE looks for parts when opening an assembly is in the same folder as the assembly.
So if you have 2 part files with the same name, one in the assembly folder, one in a different folder, SE will not use the one in the different folder. You will also not be able to use this one in a 'Replace' command, whether in the Assembly or in Rev Manager.
If the parts are in different folders to the assembly you will still not be able to do a 'Replace' in the assembly, but I think will be able to do the replace using Rev Manager.
Hope this makes sense.

As Scott says, using the LinkManagement text file may change the way things work, but I wouldn't advise it.

You shouldn't really have 2 files with the same name anyway.

Thank you all.

There was a discussion in the official SolidWorks forum where someone had claimed that SW and Excel were the only programs which could not open same named files. I was looking for evidence to the contrary.

To answer your question directly, you can open a file from a certain folder and open a file with the same name but from a different folder at the same time with Solid Edge ST1

Patrick

You could always open files of the same name from different folders. We have a lot of same named components and some times we open 1 from 1 folder and other from another folder.
