NO more PLC - looking for "C++" prog. controller! 2

I have used PLC logic for control on all of my designs. Now I am looking for a C++ programmable controller for discrete I/O,& analog I/O control. I Also need serial communications capability. My company has given me a budget to "get up to speed" with C++ programming. It has been several years since I've programmed with C++. Does anyone know of an affordable (less than A-B Micrologix 1500 $) c-programmable controller and a good source for learning to write C source code for machine control. any advice would be appreciated. thanks.

The only 'C' programmable PLC I've heard of is the New AB<br>
Rolls Royce. Fifteen years ago we built our own 'PLCs' and programmed them with 'C'. I've also used Grayhill's Brainboard with the 68HC11 CPU running Avocet 'C' on it. There are many SBC's with X86/pentiums which will run 'C' I've used Borland on them. Allen Bradley is trying to compete with their 1500 and are coming out with a 1200. We use PLC Direct and AB will match them in price. The 1500 is coming out with a two serial port version. with Modbus capability. Of course PLC Direct has never been stingy with the serial ports. I prefer to use the Mitsubishi Fx2N. We get it for less than anything else and it can have 2 onboard serial ports.<br>

I have programmed equipment in C and other languages for about 13 years. I don't know of a good book on the subject, but I would be glad to give you some tips on how to get started, with choosing a platform, operating system, compiler, hardware, etc. My experience is in embedded systems, with some experience in writing PC-based operator/network interface programs. It is a software package that allows PLC type programming on PCs, and it looks like it has potential. There are PCs available for under $1,500, but after you add the I/O and software you need, you may exceed that figure. Also, industrial PCs are more expensive, but in the factories where I have used PCs, it made more sense to use cheap hardware. They survived the environment OK, and most of the components are readily available and inexpensive to replace. I try to stay away from proprietary hardware, since the machines usually outlive the technology by 10-20 years in my industry.
