Normally there would be no chemical tests applied to Mild Steel. In-house there may be tensile, yield and notch testing done on material from a new or non certified vendor. Usually the plate is purchased from/through a certified distributor or you purchase a mill run order and the steel mill/mfg supplies the cerification. The chemical component of the alloy is part of the certification. This process satisfies ABS and DOD both. Hope this helps, JSC, johnscrowe@worldnet.att.net

I dont have any background in ship designing or building. But I guess, it makes sense to use Boiler and Pressure Vessel quality steel for ship building and material selection.

If so, you should refer to appropriate ASME code for design and fabrication of Boiler nad Pressure Vessels. Section 8 (Division 1) will deal about the engineering and Section 2 (Part A) will give the material specification. But you should go through the whole catalogue of ASME to find out whether they have any recommendation for ship building.

G'Luck.
