I was recently involved with the design of a private watermain (12" dia). On this line we had three firehydrants, two fire services, and one domestic. Based on our calcualation we determined that a 12" main, although conservative should be used. however based on our demand the water authority picked a 6" meter. this will work with our design but I have a feeling in the pit of my stomach that I missed something and this desgn will not give us enough pressure. We have about 1500 feet of main and we designed for the fire flow.

Jimdpe!

Nothing to worry about. (provided you are confident about your design, what is the velocity?)I have seen conditions where fluid velocity being maintained upto 9m/s for flow meters when the pressure drop was not a problem.(This is to reduce cost, just check the pressure drop)

What are your concerns about pressure?

you have to give us some more info. what are your flows and what is the beginning pressure that the water purveyor is supplying you? What kind of meter is it? the meter will be a minor loss and should not be a problem, but it is still usefull to know....
