I'm attempting to use MS Project to set up a management framework for a large business integration project.

I am modeling the framework by grouping tasks by Unifed Process-like 'disciplines' (formerly called 'workflows' in early version of the Rational Unified Process), e.g. 'Communication,' 'Contract Management,' etc.

I have to manage 'workflows' (in the traditional meaning of that term, i.e. sequences of inter-dependent tasks that <<cross>> 'discipline' boundares) and can't figure out how to get a 'workflow-level' summary of dates, costs, etc. against which to manage UNLESS I create an artifical Summary task that groups all of my tasks across all of my disciplines, something that is messy at best.

I'm hoping someone can tell me that I'm missing something really obvious and tha MS Project does have the capability to 'manage across summary tasks.'

Thanks in advance -- charlie

I think I can help!
I think you'll find your solution through Grouping.

But first I would set up an Outline Code that aligns with your disciplines or workflows.

You can probably find more details off Microsofts website, but here goes a quick "How To".
1. Insert the field Outline Code1 into your schedule.
2. Right click on this heading and then click on Customize Fields.
3. Click on Rename and type in Workflow then OK.
4. Click on Define Code Mask, Click on dropdown and choose Characters, then OK
5. Click on Edit Lookup Table and insert a short name for each workflow on the left with a brief description on the right. Then Close, and finally OK.
6. Within your schedule, for each task, you will now need to choose the correct Workflow from the dropdown in the Workflow field.
7. Now that all tasks are coded, go to >Project, >Group, >Customize Group, Click on dropdown to the right of Group By and select Outline Code1, then select OK

MS Project should now show a grouping of tasks based upon your workflows!

Hope this helps!
