Hello,

I'd like to test 5000 kVA generator performace by connecting a load bank. Any one ever purchase it and testing a emergency diesel generator? How much budget I shall prepare for one load bank? Thank you.

Thats a 5MVA standby generator? Mind telling us what its backing up?

At 2MVA IEC style LV sets start to get a bit silly for current, and I don't know that MV load banks would be easy to come by.

We use 11kV 3MVA load banks on our site. They were manufactured by Crestchic Ltd who are still in business.

This is a 13.8kv 5MVA DG connected a with a MV bus of a newly built power plant.
Our goal is to exam the AVR performance, bearing lubricant system and cooling system during generator full or no load. Consecutively Starting generator at full load, voltage droop..etc.
Thank you.

My initial impression was that you wanted to have a permantly installed load bank for regular standby diesel testing, which is typically the case for installations where the grid feeds the loads while an emergency stanby diesel is used for critical loads only when the grid is down. As it may take years in some cases for grid to go down, some places do install a permanet load bank for regular periodic generator testing.

But if that is not the case at your facility, why would you need need to purchase a load bank? Why not rent one if you need it for a week or similar to test governor and AVR reponse or so? Sounds that you may be a PM with no electrical background and if so perhaps getting some electrical help would be practical at this stage...

Chrestchic makes a very good series of loadbanks, and has offices all over the world, can support rentals or sales

Aggreko is a large company with worldwide offices, US link,

How about going back to your engine/generator supplier? Most larger suppliers have resources for testing, both short term and sales.

You might get better answers if you could provide where you are in the world.

Another load bank supplier to consider - SIMPLEX (Springfield, Illinois).

Cressall Resistors have been in the business a long time in one guise or another. I'm more familiar with their neutral earthing resistors than load banks, but their quality is generally good.
