Large Megs After Picture Paste 1

Hi Everyone!

Can anyone tell me how to reduce the size of my doc. with pictures in it?
I'm currently using win. 2000 and everytime I paste a picture (even in jpg.) in my MWord doc, the file becomes large, an increase of approx. 2.4MB (per photo from MPhoto Editor)...
makes my file loading REAL slow and file can't be emailed...
Any thoughts or tips are always welcomed!

Don't know if this will work but you might try inserting the graphic file as an icon. Go to Insert>Object>from file. There you will have the option of floating the picture over the text or inserting it as an icon. I have used this to insert Excel spreadsheets into on-line courses and it seems to work well but I don't know if it reduces the file size significantly.

There is a freeware image processing program called IrfanView:

With it, you can resample the image and drop the number of bits per pixel.

Have you tried to copy then paste special - picture? That will reduce size some.

If the Irfan option not suitable, I use an image program from

http://www.xat.com

to reduce pics sizes dramatically as it allows you to drop colour depth. You can see the results as you do it. Was about $35 few years back - limited free trial period as well. Another trick is to make sure the original picture is exactly the size you want it to be in the docs - often photos from source are say A4 size and displayed in doc as A6 - reduce size in pic processing software - don't reduce the pic size in the word doc as Word keeps in original size in the memory.

I've found that by doing Insert / Picture / from file, this leads to smaller file sizes than copying and pasting from the clipboard, for some reason.

I often do up photo sheets for forensic reports and have found that my digital camera 2meg *.jpg files will eventually create about a 10meg+ word document. If I print this to a file using Adobe pdfwriter... I end up with a 200k file. I email the pages to our local print shop and he prints them for the report. There is no discernable loss in the quality of the photo.
