How to represent different weld size for different type of weld

Hi,

I am a newbie here. I just want to ask help from you guys on how to represent weld size of different weld properly. Please see attached picture. Is it the picture 1 or picture 2?

What I think you are trying to show is a PJP with a reinforcing fillet weld.

If you are doing a partial penetration weld with a reinforcing fillet, then you would show groove depth and show the size of the fillet

The picture on the right shows a PJP weld (with groove depth and effective throat) and no size of fillet weld.

The picture on the left shows the groove depth and size of fillet weld. I am not sure of your numbers but that's how you would represent it.

It'd help to show what you are actually welding to get an accurate response

Picture 1 is correct, if the 6 represents your groove depth, and the 4 represents the fillet weld size.

Very little additional strength is gained by making the reinforcing fillet the same as the groove depth. Why not increase the partial pen effective size or use CJP? Either will probably require less weld metal.

Another thought...
Sometime the reinforcing fillet is for fatigue, and not increased strength. We do very little fatigue design, but I have seen a similar weld symbol on bridge details.
