Hot Spot method for seam welds

Hello everybody.
Can anybody please give some information about procedures to implement the Hot Spot method within a FEM model? For instance, what is the correct way (rigid regions, shells, solids) to model the welds? Which is the equivalent stress to be used (principal, Von Mises)? What are the admissible values for the hot spot stress?
