HG - Appendix Y Calc

I am trying to establish HG for Appendix Y flange. (Not self sealing gasket)
There is no calc in App. Y for HG.
Do I revert to App. 2 where HG = W - H?, where W = ((Am +Ab)x SA)/2 for gasket seating?
And where Am = Am2 (bolt area required for gasket seating)?

Any thoughts?

david339933, yes, I think you are on the right track there. See Y-1(b). I'd assume you'd need to check both operating and gasket seating (HG = W-H) cases.

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Thanks Mike....that seems to be the problem. Operating conditions W=Wm1 in App. Y, where Wm1 = H + HC + HG....when HG is unknown. Are you saying Wm1 be calculated as per App. 2 instead?..then use HG in App. Y where Wm1 = H + HC + HG?

Yes, so it would seem. It appears that as Appendix Y is based around a self energizing gasket, if that type is not used then you will have to design for both seating and operating conditions, as per Apx 2.

But, understand that I have not (and likely will not) go thru it in detail.

Mike

Ha...yes, understood...I don't expect you to do it all for me! Turns out bolt stress was too great for App. Y anyhow, so I used App. 2 for all.
Just curious as to methodology for my own knowledge.

david339933, no, I didn't expect you did :)
