Looking for good resource/text for theory, calcs and sample problems. Problem is sizing and designing shell and tube, plate, and other types of heat exchangers for preheating waste gas upstream of thermal oxidizer using the oxidizer off-gas. Thanks.

RV:

Regarding your question once, some years ago I had to perform the design of one downstream heat exchanger for thermal oxidizer off-gas in one sulphur recovery plant (BV&Pritchard technology).

There are some important points to consider that I'll tell you and could give you some guide lights in your design:

1.-Due the high temperature of the off-gas the main heat exchanging phenomena is the radiation, thus consider the subject as on pure radiation matter (accurately is quite good due Qradiation is aprox. 95% of the exchanging and the resting 5% is one safety margin).

2.-Use the thermodinamics and radiation exchanging formulaes as shown in very good books (Kern's is one of my favourites) and consider the correct shape and surface coeficients as shown in the radiation excahnging text.

3.-I propose the use of the hot off gas inside tubes and the incoming to the oxidizer gas outside the tubes. The tubes must be something higher than usual I propose 2" to 3" based in the perssure drop inside tubes. Finned tubes could be a problem due severe corrosions in these type of enviroments and the price of equipment would go to the stars but it is up to your criteria.

I hope to give some gidelights to you but anyhow if you need more assistance or some additional details don't hesitate in contacting me.

Regards/JCLL
