Hairpin clip design source needed

Looking of a good source or reference for hairpin clip design.

I have a 5/8" pin which needs to be held in place until a predetermined axilal load (approx. 150 lbs)is reached. The hairpin clip then releases the pin. This should allow the pin to be reset for use again.

Looking at standard hairpin clip for 5/8" shaft size - .087" dia. stainless steel (302) wire.

your problem definition is incomplete. more info is needed to solve your deisgn problem. direction of loading, materials, geometry of weld joint. etc.
hire a consulting engineer if you have no one on staff that can solve this design problem for you. [sig][/sig]

Mark, I'm afraid the predictability and/or repeatability of the release force would not be very good. Greatly dependent upon groove depth/radius and any chamfer or radius at the edge of the groove. Also, wear (both on hairpin and at the edge of the groove) over a number of release cycles would probably reduce the release force.

Good luck.

Thanks for the response -

I have realize that shear, lateral force on a detent and clips are not the answer to my application. I have hope that a review of the "breakaway" fitting on a hose offers the best solution. The fitting uses a flat circular washer crossing over the two pieces of the fitting. The washer is in tension. This allows a predictable range of failure but the washer must be replaced after it fails. Since the component I'm looking at is a safety device this may be a solution.
