FRP Pipe Butt Join

CAn anyone help with a resource that specifies thickess (number of wraps) and width of an frp piping butt and strap join for different diam frp pipe.

You should refer to the standard to which the pipe has been designed and manufactured. It will tell you what you need to do andyou can calculate the length and thickness for the wrap depending on the laminate used in the pipe construction.

Alternatively ask the pipe manufcaturer. I used to manufacture filament wound pipes and we gave out this information to the installers.

Had a hard time getting copy of standard. Client supply of old pipe, manufacture has since gone out of business. Resolved issue by engaging local contractor who specified joint method, with subsequent hydro.

Some rough rules of thumb that you can use to check the thicknesses provided:

1. The weld thickness at least that of hand layup pipe and 25% thicker than filament wound for the same diameter.

2. For 150 psi rated pipe the width should be the larger of 8" or the nominal diameter (i.e. 12" weld 12" wide, 4" weld 8" wide) Alternatively you can calculate the width based on a minimum 100 psi shear stress between half of the weld and the pipe.
