FRICTION COEFFICIENT for base isolation 1

hi to all,

can anyone tell me if american seismic codes or standards limit the maximum coefficient of friction in sliding devices employed for base isolation?

the NEHERP guidelines for buildings FEMA 273-274, 302-303
do not seem to limit the coeff. of friction, neither they prescribe any periodic lubrication

am i right?

and the AASHTO?

You need to find access to the 1991 (96) AASHTO guide specs for Seismic Isolation. You'll likely find the information your looking for in here.

Other useful reference would be Structural Dynamics by Gary Hart which has a nice treatment of seismic isolation.

Any papers written by James Kelly would be helpful as would Kelly's book on Seismic Isolation. I beleive this was in cooperation with Farzad Naiem, and so Naiem has a new chapter in his second edition of the Seismic Design Handbook on isolation.
