A sub-contractor of ours is creating AutoCAD 14 drawings for us in feet and inches, only problem is that we want them in metric.

How do I change the units so that "64" goes from being 64ft to 64mm - similar to the way that I can change the units in Pro/Engineer from 64 feet to 64mm.

Be very careful. If the units were supplied
in feet, you want to use alternate dimensions
available in the dialogue box of the dimension
section to get the conversion to mm units or
metric units. You have to supply the conversion
scale factor in the dialogue box for the dimensions
that you want to convert. Also you may show the
alternate dimensions only if that is your wish.

Try matric.lsp. Please don't forget to save the file in a different name as backup first.

Dear Phil;

I often have to insert German made Metric actuator dxf drawings into feet and inches industrial brake drawings.
You need to do the opposite. Open your metric drawing and save as "test" in case something screws up. Open version 14 a second time and load the feet and inches drawing. Copy the entire drawing to the clipboard. Flick over to the metric drawing. Insert the feet and inches geometry, scale it down by the conversion factor between inches to mm (1/25.4). Use match properties to convert the feet and inches dimstyles to the original metric ones from your drawing. There are probably slicker ways to do it, but thats how I would handle it.

If you need to convert the existing units from metric to imperial or vice versa, never re-scale the drawing as you are not changing the units as such you are changing the size of the items!!!!!

Do as diamondjim says use the alterntate units option in the dimensions style dialog.

The advantage of this is that you are not modifying the original drawings scaling, you are only adding alternative dimensions in the format required.

I apologize if this question has been asked previously. There are so many hits on metric, it is overwhelming.

I have a project where I have to add metric units to drawings that already contain US. But, in most cases, the measurements were placed as text, not as a calculated dimension.

Is there an alternative to hand adding the metric measurements, such as a routine?

Thanks in advance.
