FE/PE Exams

Hello fellow engineers,

I'm new to this forum and really hope to get some tips from you guys. Not sure if this question has been asked before but I'm currently planning to take the FE and PE exams under Chemical Engineering discipline. I graduated from college about three years ago majored in Industrial Engineering, but most of my work experience is related to Process Engineering (oil and gas),i.e. Chemical Engineering. Therefore, I would like to pursue my professional status in Chemical discipline. Given that passing a PE is a major milestone in one's career path and could be very difficult even in his/her own major, I can imagine it would be extremely challenging for a guy coming from a different major. If you have had the similar experience or know someone gone through a similar path, could you please share your thoughts how possible it would be for a non-chem guy to pass the chem FE, and finally the PE? Regardless, what strategies should I take to prepare for those exams? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Go to NCEES.org and check out what they have. Also there is a company (PPI2) I think that has all kinds of study guides.

I know several professional engineers who have taken the PE exam and passed the exam in the discipline that they work in, which was not the discipline that they majored in college. The PE exam tests your ability to practice engineering, so don't be too worried about the fact that you did not major in the same field that you practice.

The FE exam is slightly different and is geared towards the fundamentals and principles of the field. The engineers, that I previously mentioned, decided to take the general FE and one of the engineers decided to take the exam that he had majored in.

I actually found the FE test (30+ years ago) to be more difficult than the PE!! The FE tested EVERYTHING you ever learned or forgot. The PE allowed me to pick and choose what I wanted to work on.

Heck - I did a simple transportation problem in about 5 minutes - even though I was more of a structural guy. But it was too easy to pass up!!
