Experience in Finding New Employees

My company is in need of hiring an engineer with experience. I can think of several ways to advertise a position such as magazine ad, newspaper ad, websites such as Monster, and a staffing firm. I am curious about other peoples experiences using the different methods and if anyone has suggestions for other ways to advertise.

Unless you expect a looong search for the "perfect" candidate or the magazine has a very short advertising schedule, you'll want to stay away from them... quite expensive, and you'll continue to advertise long after the job is filled. Newspaper ads are cheap. Staffing firms are hit or miss, Monster is hit or miss but in a different way than the firms... do both, if you can afford it.

I'd interview staffing agencies and find several that staff for your industry and that you have a good rapport with, they will provide candidates based on your criteria (roughly) and you can interview with no obligation or cost.

I agree with Ashereng about getting referrals from current employees that are good. If you can afford to, offer a referral bonus of between $500 to $1500.
 
We tried posting ads in Monster and on Craigslist. Virtually every single hit from Monster was crap (we got about 50). Craigslist produced a much better signal to noise ratio, but fewer hits overall (about 10, but we hired one of them).

Cost of Monster: $400
Cost of Craigslist: Free

That said, referrals are the way to go if you can get them. Hopefully your company's employees won't need to be bribed too much to bring in their friends.
