What temperature is considered excessive for a fire pump bearing?
What temperature is considered excessive for the shaft?
What temperature is considered excessive for the fire pump casing during churn periods?
Nearly all of the fire pump inspection forms I have seen indicate the inspector should ensure these temperatures are acceptable, but I have never seen an "acceptable range". I have 15 years experience and I have yet to find any documentation which provides temperature ranges for these problems. Most fire pump components stay cool to the touch, but I have noticed a trend. When I find bearings and pump shafts with temperatures between 130-150F (obvious friction problems), the pump manufacturers and "Certified" installation contractors claim there is no problem. I even had a Fairbanks Morse representative tell me anything under 195F is acceptable, but I have a very hard time with 195F after a 10-30 minute run period. What would happen during an actual fire incident if this same fire pump operates continuously for 12-24 hours?
If anyone knows where I can find documentation regarding the acceptable temperature ranges, please post them here!!!!
