Hi all.

BigH, a while back, you, VAD, SRE, McCoy, and others had discussed an electronic technical journal for practicing engineers (ETJPE). Are we still interested in doing that?

I've got two papers that I'm making some changes to and I'd like to submit them to the ETJPE. I think that many folks will find what I've done interesting.

Let me know where I can send 'em in! It may be another couple weeks before I complete the changes on both of them, but I wanted to get a head start.

By the way, for others unfamiliar with what I'm talking about, one of the original threads is:

thread1134-136597

I've formatted these papers after the "mock-up" paper created by Mccoy. I think that format looks great; very professional. I don't recall what was decided on, but I'd vote for that format.

MRM - I won't be able to participate in the "full-scale" ETJPE, as discussed some time ago. My wife & I have moved to a different home and are doing a lot of renovations ourselves - really cuts down on available time.

However, I will be happy to post your papers on my website, either in the private section, for this forum, or the public portion for all to see and use.

If you choose to put them in the public portion, you will get quite an audience. The website gets about 8,000 to 14,000 "hits" per month from folks all over the world - never ceases to amaze me.

[idea]

It's also possible to have this on vulcanhammer.net, which is currently running about 30,000 unique visitors a month. You can contact me via the contact form on the site.

Thanks for the responses. I'll need to think about what I should do.

It looks like geoengineer wants about $32 to look at that papers. EJGE is free to all who want to look at those, although there is a fee to submit a paper of $120. I do like the idea of having the paper available free of charge though, which is why I'd lean toward EJGE (even if it costs me something), or SRE's site, which I know is popular.

MRM - I am so [blush] that we have let this slip by - there was good interest - then I got busy, then lazy, and . . . I think that SRE's site is a good one for this - I have a name/site and actually it is hosted but haven't gotten around to doing anything with it. We can turn this into a Foundations by Terzaghi adventure if anyone is interested with links to SRE and Vulcanhammer sites. is the site. I hope to get something going it within a couple of months. The juices are starting to flow back in - after I have to take the Indonsesian Mine Safety Exam next week. Of course, I'd never ask for any money to "post" for our group and the use of papers and personal reflections on the geotechnical field would be one of the aspects I wish to explore.
[cheers]

Hi BigH.

I've also let it slip by. I would definitely be interested in giving it another go. I appreciate the reminder that you've already taken out a site (geotechs4geotechs). It's been so long that I had forgotten some of what we discussed a while back...

One of my biggest hopes is that we'll have some type of a peer review system in place; I don't want to post my own material, only to find that there are aspects of it that are highly questionable that I've overlooked!

I hope that we can start it up again because the concept of the ETJPE is a good one, and with the proposed paper format by Mccoy and others, it will look great.

Can you send SRE a "draft" of your paper in the McCoy format? That way we can all see what it looks like. I think that anything we would put on a site must be reviewed by at least a couple of us - as we did for your paper in ASTM. By the way - what was the date of publication, etc. so we can see the final product??

I sure can. I'll e-mail the first of the two papers on Friday to SRE. I believe I've still got that e-mail address at home. That'll give me one more chance to review it and make minor changes if necessary. I appreciate your time, SRE's, and anyone else willing to have a look.

The ASTM paper came out in May 2006. I've got a copy of the paper in pdf format. I don't want to step on the toes of ASTM, but I'd be willing to share it if we don't distribute it to others a whole lot. I'm not sure what the official rules are about that.

MRM, BigH,
I'd be still happy to see an ETJPE journal, I'm available to work, contribute or o review (the latter depending on the subject though).

I've been busy lately with an article which I've published in my site. That's all in Italian though, since the target is domestic. Of course, the subject (drilled piles bearing caèpacity with EC7) turned out to be pretty more tangled than I previously thought, and took months to complete. I might translate it into English, but I'm not sure it's of interest to non-europeans. All units are in metrics !!!

MRM,
whatever article of yours may be hosted on my site as well, besides SRE's and others. I'll also make reference to it into the two main fora dealing with geotechnical subjects in Italy (viewed by geologists and structural engineers).

Sounds good, Mccoy. It will be nice to be able to post the paper in a variety of places, yet it will officially be an ETJPE paper for consistent referencing purposes.

By the way, which units do we prefer to use? Either? Both?

I've learned to be comfortable in the SI system (metre, kN, second, kPa, MPa) and with the global view of the web, I would think that first preference would be that system. Perhaps, though, we should only suggest it and let the author decide - especially if he is using a lot of "dated" data having decided late to put things to paper/screen.

I've e-mailed a draft paper to SRE. (And yes, it was on Friday before midnight, Eastern time.) See what you think. I look forward to your comments in helping me to make the paper better. Thanks again, in advance, for your time! Hopefully we can get our online journal off the ground.

Thanks, SRE. I look forward to your comments.

I've already found a few things that you can only see once you send a paper off to someone else for review!

Mark: I have it too and will be looking at it in the next several days. I have a Indonesian mining supervisor's test on Thursday so I have to bone up on stuff I know so little about (what does building a hydro dam have to do with mining? - well, the site is located on designated mining property!) cheers

I downloaded Mark's paper.

Already browsed it, I'm going to read it soon!

BigH,

So how about ETJPE and where can it be hosted.

We might as well start out with an informal journal, taking the time to register it later. Only minimal time stolen now from your exam preparation.

I've an idea for another paper on practical Bayesian analysis in field investigation.
