Thought that I would get this put over onto a new thread. I am not sure that we can have three referees VAD; perhaps two might be enough for now. One of the ideas that I had years ago was to get the "older" engineers to write short notes on interesting projects that were geared to how to get the engineers to think; and, perhaps, say: "Damn, that sounds like my situation." To this end, I will contact Fred Matich (former Geocon President) Vic Milligan and John Seychuk of Golders, Chuck Brawner and a few others and see if they might be interested in this type of paper/submission. I would give us credibility to be able to have some of these well-known PRACTICING engineers in the fold for a few notes. Also, we should check into getting recognized (later perhaps) for the purpose of practicing engineers getting continuing education points by submitting papers. Some thoughts there. I would suggest that all can contact me directly and I, along with SRE, can co-ordinate efforts, etc. put together a mailing/address list of our members (if anyone would object, then please advise).

BigH - You do own Geotechs4Geotechs.com, but your 3 year registration expires on Aug 26 of this year. Searching this time, I cannot find the offer to sell the domain at any price. What I saw before may have been either a "scam" or an offer to register it to anyone on Aug 27 (if you do not renew).

Engineers4Engineers.com is shown as being recorded on 16 Nov 2004 & expiring on 16 Nov 2005 by:

I had a look at the links suggested by SRE.

Asce online is accessible on subscription only, at a cost.

The geoengineering case history journal is free, with an impressive editorial board, very specific on the topics. Just case histories. Looks like it's just kicking off. The following is its foreword:
The webpage structure may give an idea on possible formats.

tenlinks.com displays a huge list of tech journals, many fields.
A few random clicks did not reveal any free journals available. I'll do a more in-depth search on that list.

Yes, the list is impressive - but none of the people listed to my knowledge is known as a practitioner first, academic second. There would be exceptions, no doubt, perhaps Doe from Golders. I am sure that the case histories will be great but, again, who will be published. Likely not the staff engineer in a geotech firm in Kansas City MO; and will the papers really turn out to be something that a practicing engineer can "use". Will see; I would suggest that if any of you can get copies of Ground Engineering from the late 60s and early 70s to take a look at the articles there; so good and so practical. They do not put out the same quality now - now it is more like a newspaper/magazine tooting contractor's tunes but little substance.
So, . . . I gave Mccoy a site to check on : .

I've asked Mccoy to think about tasks that we can forward on for input. Format, layout, etc. Logo is with SRE; I will mock up an "edition" but using articles that I have from elsewhere to show you all the direction I hinted at above - but please, one and all, forward your comments to my rant of last night!
[cheers] to all.

SlideRuleEra,
That looks great. Good work!

So what's the next step with our ETJPE project? Let me know how I can assist. We should begin to send SlideRuleEra some info and possibly photos too, for the bios.

I'll have another draft of my paper ready in...well let me have about 2 to 3 weeks. That will help me make the most of the valuable comments I've received, and it will also give us more time to develop our policies for publication, etc.

Just checking in...are there any tasks that need to be done concerning the journal? Have we got some kind of a target date for a first edition?

I think that most of my initial papers will be in the technical note realm. Perhaps I should simply begin working on those so that I can turn one or two in?

I have browsed through this thread and find the suggestions very interesting. I think that it would be a good idea to be able to publish very practical papers, thoughts, suggestions from practicing geotechnical engineers to practicing geotechnical engineers.

I will take some time to come up with potential topics that we may want to solicit papers on.

I would like to help in what ever way I can.

Glen - glad to have you on board. Everyone! [blush] - this has slid a bit and I do plan on pushing it forward. I'm in the last month of my contract here in India and it appears that I will be off to Indonesia for another assignment. I've a lot of packing to do. I think that I have many of this group's email addresses. What I would like to know if anyone has a problem with sharing between our own Fdns by Terzaghi group? If you are not sure if I have yours or wish that you don't want to have your address to others in the group - let me know. bohica.fries "at" bigfoot "dot" com .
For those who have started, I would like to try to finalize the formatting (McCoy) soon. VAD and MRM - to put together a small brief "reviewer" brief. If you have any suggestions/improvements to logo - see SlideRuleEra at his web site. It would be nice if we could have a publication ready for a Jan15 date. Would hope for 4 or 5 papers, a couple 3 or 4 technical notes, some "wisdom" notes and maybe a section of photos!
Best regards to all.

BigH,
I'm ready to proceed, as far as formatting is concerned I remember we spoke about many things, and a final decision should be taken. My focus was on simplicity and ease of reading, both on the screen and the hard copy. Other issues have been discussed, such as opportunity of a grid on the background; main point though would remain type and size of font.
My address remains the same:

mccoy20042004@yahoo.com

I went backpacking to Indonesia 13 years ago (Sumatra); I remember spending money was real hard, I had food and accomodation in a national park at about 1 dollar a day.
And not even too many mosquitos around. Good days!
Let us know about your setup when you will be there!

McCoy - I understand that we discussed this. I would suggest you "finalize" based on your thoughts and send out a mock-up to SRE who could put on his site for our people to look at and comment. I think that the main papers should be on white or slightly offwhite background - perhaps with a stripe down the left side; the technical notes could be on the gridded paper - very light thin lines along those I sent to you from other sites to give the field of technical to us old-timers. The notes of wisdom can be white paper perhaps with a fancy scroll across the top and bottom to give "philosophy" a push. Anyway - let's see what you have; and many thanks for your input.
I'll advise one and all about Indonesia. I worked in Sumatra on a couple of occasions. Spent several months in Padang on west coast, a week up about 2 hrs by car south of Banda Aceh, and then a few days here and there in Lake Toba, Medan, southern tip. Sumatra was a pretty neat place with not nearly the overpopulation you find in Java.
[cheers]

Sorry guys,
I've been busy for a few days:
last year I went back to school, I thought a degree in engineering might come in handy ( I'm a geologist).
Now the time has come to tackle calculus 3, and that's a pretty hard nut to crack. Expecially after 25 years you took calc 1 and 2.
Besides, today they use lots of mathematical notation and symbols I didn't dream could exist! It took me the whole week to regain my bearings.
Back to the guidelines: I'm going to finalize the proposals ASAP and as soon as they'll be ready I'll send the material to ERA and give notice about it in a new thread.
BigH, I remember lake Toba, now a nice place but a former supervolcano which holds the record for the biggest eruption in the quaternary. Mean temperatures dropped a few degrees worldwide.
Apparently, Sumatra has never been a quiet place to live in.
