DWGEditor corrupts AutoCAD files?

I've edited DWG file in DWGEditor and unfortunately saved it. Now that file cannot be opened by AutoCAD anymore, only by DWGEditor. AutoCAD gives "unhandled error" and crashes.
Anyone have any experience with something like that?

Can you save-as dxf from DWGEditor & read that back into ACAD?
Do you have backups of your ACAD files?

I just tried it. It opened fine in AutoCAD 2005.

No, I cannot. I've tried dxf and DWG for ACAD r13, AutoCad crashed. I tried recovery- did not help.
It is not big deal to recreate the drawing (getting it from backup tape will take longer). But I've learned the lesson- DWGEditor is bad.

I use DWGEditor and have never had a problem with it. The only problem I have is, it is AutoDesk related.[wink]

What version of ACAD are you using to open it? My understanding is that 2005 has a new file structure which renders its drawings unreadable by earlier versions. I'd imagine (& hope) that DWGEditor is saving to the latest format.

Have you tried it on other files with the same result?Since Chris is able to do it, it would seem to be either the ACAD version issue or a random SWX bug that should be reported to SWX. My money would be on the former.

Yes, you all are right. This is Autocad issue.
File crashed in AutoCAD 2004 Mechanical but opens without problems in regular Autocad 2004.
Thank you.

If you went from AutoCAD Mechanical to DWGEditor and back to AutoCAD Mechanical, you may have a proxy object (block w/x-data) that is damaged.

Try opening in plain AutoCAD 2004, making sure to leave proxy objects displayed. It will be something that you can move or delete in plain 2004 but not edit. If it is a fastener, BOM balloon, or similar small block, it may be just as effective to delete it and replace it.
