Can anyone explain the definition of a ROD element in Nastran? I don't have access to this information and would like to understand the general properties and assumptions inherent to this type of element.

Thanks,
Sjbjcl

Why not? Nastran installations come with documentation!

johnhors,

Thanks for your reply. I don't have a copy of Nastran. I am reviewing a FEA report that someone else prepared and I thought that someone here could help.

The rod is a simple truss type element that has axial and torsional stiffness. If you think of a truss where each member is pinned at its end, the rod element would be ideal. Do you need the stiffness matrix formulation?

Hi dmacx,

I really appreciate your response. This information is very helpfull. It sounds like it is similar to a pinned beam. Is it capable of carrying any transverse forces and bending? I think that something that explains the general properties and fixities would be helpful.

Thanks,
sjbjcl

sjbjcl,

CRODs do not carry or transmit shear/bending forces by definition: only axial tension/compression.

Hi Spirit,

Thanks for the explanation. Interesting choice of element. In their analysis they used three rod elements at each attachment point to isolate the reaction loads. I supposed that using this type of element on an interior monument would make sense. That way you can be sure that the monument is not affected by the rod element.

Thanks for all your help guys.
