I used search, and found some closed threads only so i had to make a new one.

I have created an assembly, with all parts, and drawings as a template. The whole system is run via design tables with vba programming, works real slick.

All my guys need to do is copy the template, run the macro in the design table, and get a new custom designed part with drawings almost complete.

Trying to now impliment it all in pdmworks.
I can find no way for them to copy the project or assembly/children.
They cant all have admin rights so copy project will not work.
Pack and go does not seem to work for items in the vault.

So is the only way for me to keep the template outside of the vault, and then have them use pack&go, copy everything to a new name directory, edit to new specs, then check into vault?

And if thats the only way, what happens to common parts, like bearings and such that are stored in the vault but used in the template?

If I understand correctly, you want each user to have his/her own copy of each part/assy/dwg in PDMW?

If you do not have lot of new assemblies, you could copy project yourself or assign it to someone you trust with administrator rights. Using “copy project” would change your common parts name also, sounds like you do not want them to change. That is going to be tough. Try keeping common parts, like bearings and such in a read only folder that even the Administrator cannot write too while using the “copy project” tool. Your employees may have to do a replace of common parts when done.
Good Luck, sounds like a fun project.

Ok a little background.
We make pulleys. So almost every job, of the thousands we do, is made up of the same parts. A rim, 2 ends, a shaft, etc.

The dimensions are never the same so configs do not work, but the assembly tree is identical. So I have an assembly that is currently in a shared folder. An engineer or designer can use pack & go, give it the job number prefix, and copy the whole assembly tree including drawings to a new folder. Then edit the new files.

I wish to impliment a similar system, but within pdmworks for revision control, multi user security, etc.
So I want to keep a template, which is an assembly, all the sub parts, and drawing sheets in pdmworks.

I want the designer to somehow copy the template assembly & drawings to a new project folder, giving it a prefix at the same time. So then they can edit and print the new drawings.

The only way i can see to do this is to not have anything in the vault. To keep all the parts outside, and continue to use pack&go. Then to check in at the final when the parts are edited.

Using vault admin is not a great solution since I have multiple people creating as many as 15 new copies a day each.

I think you are on the right track. Do not have them in the Vault. You can make the templates on a server and have each pc point to them as the default files.

Randy,
If “pack & go” will give the prefix number. Keep your assembly, with all parts, and drawings as a template in PDM. Your designers can copy the files to a new project folder on their working directory. Then use “pack and go” to copy it to a different directory with the new numbers. Put your template in a read only folder in PDM.

-So i have one set in the vault, with revision control. (this step is not necassary but does keep a read only version with revision control which is handy)
-A current copy of the vault files checked out and placed on the server in a shared folder.
-Users then use pack&go to copy from the shared server folder to their local drive with job number preifix added in the process.
-once files are edited into an intial proposed version for the new job they are checked back into the vault.

Ok i think all that will be workable. Still need to figure out how/where to use common parts like bearings. I had planned to keep them in the vault, but now may be better if they are in shared folders and added to toolbox directories. Keeping them outside the vault even during checkin. Something like a bearing has to be avaialable for "replace" command. Not sure that works with vault items.

Thanks for the help !

Randy,
Yes you can put your command parts in Vault and it will work using replace. We do that all the time.
If you are making new bearings I would use one you already have and do a save as copy. That way when you replace a bearing with another bearing the mates will work.

Check out the software package called DriveWorks. It's an english company at This will automate every single step of the process you're trying to do manually.
