Conductive acetal (POM) wanted

Does anyone know where can I find conductive acetal (POM) injection grade material suitable for bearing? The bearing has to be conductive so that current can flow through to the shaft which runs on the conductive bearing.

Your request is in the realm of "Ying and Yang"!

The materials that are used to make a material conductive will hammper the acetal from being a good bearing. I have experience with Celcon EF20. The material is 20% carbon fiber reinforced acetal for strength, stiffness and electrical conductivity. The material was used for about the same application.

My suggestion is to contact Polymerland (GE). They bought out LNP and would be able to give you the latest offerings of materials. LNP was always able to get me material as I needed it.

Another lower cost option may be a carbon black loaded POM. This may give you what you need and at a lower cost than CF. RTP Company handles these products.

The Celcon grade mentioned above is certainly a possibilty. Celcon is manufactured by Ticona (who I work for) and is know variously as Celcon (Americas) , Hostaform (Europe) and Duracon (Far East). We offer a range of POM products with Carbon Fibre and Conductive Carbon.

Another option is to use a masterbatch of POM carring long stainless steel fibres which will give excellent through part conductivity though surface conduction will be low until some wear takes place and the fibres are exposed. I haven't seen bearing done this way as yet but it may be a possiblity if you require very good conduction though I suspect wear might be an issue.

The only material I know that gives real current carrying capicity, rather than static discharge, is stainless fibre filled.
DSM certainly, and RTP and LNP probably offer some SS fibre filled plastics, but I don't know if Acetal is avaliable. Maybe another polymer matrix will make a suitable bearing with SS fibre Regards
