Company with multiple CAGE codes 1

When calling out a vendors item in our bill of materials, or on a vendor item drawing, we use CAGE code and their part number. What happens when you look up a company and more than one CAGE code is shown. Does it matter since all you are doing is identifying the company?

CAGE code identifies Company + Location + Facility.

So yes, it matters.

I agree with a company like Parker, where each site has a defined product line. My particular case was in regards to a Smalley or 3M, where they ship the same product from different sites and the Cage code results from BINCS do not give any indication as differentiation between them. Sometimes when you go to the company website they show Cage Codes depending on the regional office etc...

We generally try to go as high up the corporate chain as possible, i.e. corporate headquarters. You can usually figure this out by matching phone numbers and/or addresees between the company's web site and what is listed in BINCS. My last resort is to call the company and ask them for their CAGE code. This is usually met with silence, followed by me trying to explain to the person what a CAGE code is.

I highly recommend you keep this information off of the drawing. MRP system is a better place for this information. Putting too much source information that is not relevant to engineering specs on a drawing leads to confusion and wasteful unnecessary changes.

The only time I have ever seen it mentioned on a drawing is on a military/space drawing where it was required per contract.
Otherwise, always left off.

Ctopher beat me to it Tick, for some drawing systems it is a requirement typically where to some extent the govt owns or at least pays for the pack.

CAGE is an index to a large amount of data so that the whole name and address don't have to be repeated ad-infinitum.

I called the CAGE organization once about Parker. Very nice people. Turns out Sherwin-Williams was the number one holder of CAGE code numbers. It also turns out that some QA people at Parker say "CAGE what?" Normally the CAGE registration is handled through legal or business departments as they are the ones who applied in the first place, so those are the place to call. Some companies (McMaster Carr) are smart enough to put the CAGE on their website.

The point is to provide traceability to the level that traceability is required. Buying Parker hose - use the Hose Division CAGE code so when you dial the telephone number for that CAGE code someone who can sell you Parker hose will answer the phone. If you want a delay, use the top corporate number.

Be aware that every place may have multiple codes. This is because some users want to record that they dealt with a specific facility. If this is important for part traceability it may be marked on the part documentation. Some, like Sherwin-Williams, have multiple local outlets and users may want to record the exact one the credit card was used.

In multi-level organizations each CAGE entry should list the parent, but this is up to the CAGE applicant and they don't often do this.

As a supplier we frequently identify parts with ink or metal stamping, or occasionally laser etching, including either our cage code or our direct customers cage code. This is indicated on the the drawing in a note as a requirement. If it's not on our customer's drawing we do not stamp the part, unless it's part of the purchase order. In many but not all cases these have military end usage.
