The crane manufacturers association (CMAA) publish standards with design methods for cranes girders. But to me, the equations are quite confusing . Does somebody knows about some commentary or examples for these equations.

thank you

To my knowledge, CMAA has not published any design examples to accompany their specifications. In regard to CMAA Specification No. 70, I believe they were thinking about publishing such examples back in 1982 but never did. Somehow I did get a copy of a draft of these examples (which included the structural section on girder design), but I never saw that they were actually published.

Past issues of AISE Technical Report No. 6 (Association of Iron and Steel Engineers specifications for overhead cranes) did include a structural design example pertaining to the crane girders. This example (about 11 pages in length) was included in the September 1991 and June 1996 issues of that standard. There is a new issue dated 2000 that I haven't seen yet, so I don't know if it contains the same example.

AISE does have a web site at
I believe the methods used in the AISE example will follow pretty close with CMAA, although the loading combinations will differ somewhat. The AISE example is for a box girder section supporting a top running trolley.

What are you trying to design.
I used this specs for decades.
