Circuit Boards and the regulations (UL-508A) 2

Can anyone enlighten on printed circuit boards, my company is creating a custom circuit board with the intentions of UL Listing the component for our specific application. Does anyone know what publications outline the design criteria for this process?

UL508 outlines what you can EXPECT to be tested on based on what the device does. How you manufacture it is up to you, UL will test it when you are done and may require other things, such as protective devices, if they see fit once they do their testing. That's why it's often expensive to get something completely new through the UL process.

The standards used depends on what the board does.

UL508 could be used if it's industrial control equipment or basically motor control equipment rated 1500V or less.

UL840 might be used to evaluate clearances on the board.

It won't be UL508A.

I typically start with UL/IEC 60950 Safety Requirements for IT equipment or UL/IEC 61010 Safety Requirements for Measurement, Control, and Lab equipment. These define the safety standards that UL will be checking on your PCB assembly (voltage, spacing, conductor size, etc.).
